The UPS truck sits at the end of your driveway for a few minutes, than rings your bell and leaves a package. You call your mother in tears because your are certain this suspicious car was trying to abduct you. Imagine the fear! Apparently not. Where is this policy posted? No where. Is this policy legal? What does UPS have to say about this?
He was completely unsympathetic and rude. He directed me to call the headquarters. He was clearly unconcerned about suffering any consequences for breaking laws against sonic abuse. UPS management places their desire for profits over social decency. There is no need for drivers to announce their presence to the entire neighborhood. The fact that there may be children playing in the street is no reason to blast your horn. What if everyone constantly honked their horn? I'm not even kidding.
I get backing up or maybe blind corners, of which there is one, but I get the feeling this is a kid who failed some exam once and the retrainer pushed it into him like he was an idiot Is there any policy manual I can quote to get him to not be so g-damned annoying with his horn?
We are trained to honk our horn every 3 seconds. Assuming hes backing feet, and traveling in reverse at a walk pace, it makes sense hes honking that much. I think you might need to make a trip down to the hardware store, grab some tools, wood, nails.. The reasoning behind the lack of automated beeps, is because the average person is so conditioned by that noise that they tend to ignore it.
Manually beeping tends to catch peoples attention more. Statistically the vast majority of our accidents are while backing, a large chunk of those backing accidents are objects not people or cars sure, but there's still a portion of those backing accidents that are probably avoidable, due in part to the "victim" being aware of our presence.
I ask myself this often while i tap my horn in residential areas at am on a tuesday morning but hey, UPS is gonna UPS.
