The axillary nerve also provides sensation to the side of the shoulder, sometimes called the "regimental badge" area due to the area that badges were placed on uniforms.
The axillary nerve can be injured during shoulder dislocations, from improper use of crutches, or with fractures of the neck of the humerus.
